Oh hey so serious question post about ableism:

Sometimes when someone posts something that I strongly disagree with (like an opinion that is both harmful and obviously not thought out at all) I want to point out that the opinion is a terrible opinion to have.

I ALSO want to point out that the person having that opinion is terrible for having it, and I want to base the reason for the terribleness on a lack of thought put into it.

BUT I *only* want to offend *that person* and *no other people*.

What word do I use?

I have learned that “dumb”, “stupid”, “moronic”, “foolish” (?) et al are ableist (and I understand why), and I’ve heard inoffensive alternatives like “misinformed” are acceptable.

Well, they’re not acceptable to me! My problem with the inoffensive alternatives are that, while they remove offense from general groups, they also remove it from the specific person.

I’m serious here, too! I’m not being like “ableism police are misguided because they’re on a Huxleian quest to neuter debate! I will passive-aggressively pose my criticism of the movement as a question”, I’m being like “seriously what is the recommended course of action here?”

thanx u 4 ur patience

Vain, shallow, poisonous, petty, misguided, offensive, selfish, biased, hypocritical, mean, cruel, uninformed, lazy, hateful, narrow-minded/close-minded, ignorant, useless (the idea, not the person, because calling someone useless is not a thing that people should do), archaic, outdated, thoughtless, etc.

Or more simply, words that reflect undesirable traits within a person that are very much within the persons’ control to change and that are hurtful to others. Someone can brush off being called out on being a “bitch” or an “idiot” by raving on about the connotations of the word in use, but when they are called out on being hurtful and cruel, there isn’t much they can say in response, except to attack your grammar I guess.

Other words that can express that an IDEA is a thoughtless one are words that can be used to express how out of place an idea is (archaic, outdated). The thing with using those words though is that they rely very heavily on the context in which they are used.

Hope this helped you slightly to offend people without being offensive!

Emboldening mine.

This is wonderful advice! Oh man. This is such a great post. Thank you!

I made a video just now and, as usual, it’s funny almost entirely due to my deviations from the script rather than what I originally wrote.

My English teacher/student teacher will look directly at me when my hand is raised and no one else has theirs raised, smile, and chose someone who wasn’t raising their hand.

like i know teachers are supposed to that but she like never calls on me to answer a question how rude

;-;

my math teacher does the same thing

oh man welcome to my entire school life

once in Spec Maths in year 12 the teacher was telling us which problems we had to do and he’s like “now it’s probably gonna take you a while to work this one out” and then he goes “except Tom will probably know it immediately” with like an exasperated throw-hands-in-the-air gesture

man I miss maths

gotta do more maths

smart people problems

what a fantastic word

Mudita (Pāli and Sanskrit: मुदित) in Buddhism is joy. It is especially sympathetic or vicarious joy, the pleasure that comes from delighting in other people’s well-being rather than begrudging it.[1] The traditional paradigmatic example of this mind-state is the attitude of a parent observing a growing child’s accomplishments and successes, but it is not to be confounded with proudness as the person feeling mudita must not have any interest or direct income from the accomplishments of the other.
